Ya Dounia
يا دنيا
Poems inspired by SNX's songs, retold by AIA Labs.
From the song
Ya Dounia يا دنيا by SNX
A different song from the Egyptian "Ya Donya." A Moroccan Darija voice sings to the world: if you had come to our neighbourhood on a winter's day and looked at us from the rooftop at sunset, you would have seen how much we cried and how far we came. A spoken English passage tells the listener to relax, be patient, listen: you have questions and I have answers. The chorus accuses the world: oh world, we were raised by Monsieur, you could not resist, it is written, we have nowhere to go. A second English passage says the answer is not in front of you but in your heart and soul; the mind can be manipulated, programmed, and changed, but the heart cannot; follow your heart; if you are in love, fall in love and do not overthink; and if you do not feel it, do not force it, because it is not for you.
Deeper meaning
Fate (the Arabic word for "it is written") answered by the English advice to follow your heart. The two halves argue with each other: resignation in the Arabic, agency in the English. That tension is the song.
