Ana Mashi
أنا ماشي
Poems inspired by SNX's songs, retold by AIA Labs.
From the song
Ana Mashi أنا ماشي by SNX
A farewell addressed to a friend. The declaration that he is leaving is the spine of the song. He says the friend's eyes, hands and hair all give things away, so everything speaks. He remembers a last night when they built a tent and stayed. He says he has lost many things, asks the friend not to be hard on him, and says it is not in his hands. He could not carry on with his life. The verses run together with chanted repeats of the departure line, and the Arabic changes between Egyptian and Maghrebi as the voice moves.
Deeper meaning
The leaving is a decision he insists is not a choice. It is the song of a man who has to go and wants to be understood. The line about eyes, hands and hair tells that the friend already knows. The last night in the tent is the one image of belonging, and it is placed so that the leaving cuts against it.
