Hiding Pain with a Smile

A man laughs in front of people and looks fine, but the story inside is different. He says "I am good" and hides all the tiredness, afraid that if he speaks one day everything will be exposed. Every glance that passes thinks he is at ease; nobody sees what is within. He has become used to hiding everything in his chest and telling himself to stay strong and show nothing. Each day he wears a face that does not match the one underneath. He wants to be honest about how he feels, but fears showing weakness. He notices that others smile while exhausted, each carrying years of worry. Perhaps if they spoke they would find each other; perhaps understanding would lighten the load and nobody would need to hide. Being honest is not weakness, it is a way of facing the truth. He is learning to be clear with himself, to listen to his own voice, to keep feelings from being silenced, and not to pretend when he feels broken.
